If you had to pick one thing, what would it be?
In our just-published interview with Jim Haudan, CEO at Root Inc. and author of The Art of Engagement, Jim responded with this answer:
“If I had to pick one, I’d say the thing that people most long for at work is the opportunity to tell the truth. The opportunity to be told the truth and the opportunity to feel free and safe, to tell the truth.”
I imagine my response to this question might be similar to Jim’s.
When I reflect on my working career, I can immediately recall and hear this loud voice that watched over everything I said. There was always a very palpable yet invisible threshold that couldn’t be crossed. Crossing the threshold was certain career suicide. I know, I crossed it on more that one occasion and faced the consequences.
Then there’s the whole other side of this—the opportunity to be told the truth.
Imagine what else would be possible if organizations could just change this one thing.
What about you?
What would be your one thing?
Please reply in the comments, and I’d love to engage in a conversation with you.
In closing, I’d like to urge you to read our interview with Jim. This one thing was only one of the many golden nuggets in our interview with him.
